The difference in the chemical structure of Opteon YF refrigerant (R-1234yf) compared to conventional HFC refrigerants like HFC-134a is what gives it a much lower global warming potential (GWP). The double bond in the HFO molecule makes it more reactive and easier to break down in the atmosphere, resulting in a much shorter atmospheric lifetime and lower GWP.

In addition to its lower GWP, Opteon YF also has other environmental and safety benefits compared to HFCs. It has a low toxicity and flammability, which makes it safer to handle and transport. It also has a high energy efficiency, which can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vehicle air conditioning systems. For these reasons, many countries and regions have started to phase out the use of HFCs in automotive air conditioning systems and are adopting HFO refrigerants like Opteon YF instead.
